And when it comes to wine, names like Sangiovese, Barbera, Barolo, and Pinot Grigio are renowned, but what about Sforzato or Sassella?
Nestled near the Swiss border, the Valtellina Valley is famous for its skiing, hot spring spas, cheeses (especially Bitto), and exceptional wines. One of the best places to experience the flavors of Valtellina is Il Crotasc in Mese, a charming town in the province of Sondrio, just 60 km from Lecco.
The restaurant offers two distinct dining rooms: one modern and sleek, and the other rustic and cozy, resembling a mountain cabin with traditional cooking pots and a grand stone fireplace. For an authentic experience, we recommend the rustic dining room—it’s the perfect setting to savor regional specialties like pizzoccheri, sciat, and gnocchi.
But Il Crotasc is more than just a restaurant; it’s also home to Mamete Prevostini, one of Valtellina’s finest wine producers. Their collection includes award-winning labels such as Albareda Sforzato, Corte di Cama Valtellina Superiore, and Sassella Valtellina Superiore—all personal favorites. Whenever we visit, we make sure to bring home a few bottles, especially for the Christmas holidays or to share with friends.
